Defying Age with Versatility
We believe everyone should be able to enjoy the health benefits of Pilates, so we’ve modified traditional workouts to suit the physical needs of seniors. We frequently get asked about our Pilates for seniors, so we thought we’d let you know a bit more about these amazing group classes.
No matter your age, Pilates can help you get to where you want to be.
Before beginning if you have any pre-existing conditions, or haven’t been active for a while, it’s important to book in for a Physio Assessment with one our BPS Physio Therapists.
With consistent practice the benefits of Pilates will begin to surface and you will experience greater strength, flexibility, and mobility.
“BPS is meeting my goals in an enjoyable, beneficial and constructive way. The instructors are highly trained and very competent. They have an inspiring and brilliant woman at the helm who has made this happen.”
Benefits of Pilates for Seniors
Every-BODY can benefit from Pilates. Seniors, in particular, can really benefit from a Pilates practice. You may have noticed changes in your balance, strength, flexibility, focus, and breath with aging. Pilates at its core works to improve all of those things! Pilates is gentle enough to meet you where your body is that day and every exercise can be modified to meet your needs.
“I recommend these classes to anyone interested. The physical results for doing these classes have been outstanding for me to a level I did not expect to reach after a serious illness some years ago, and these results happen while having fun and enjoyable time!”
How do we Modify Our Pilates Sessions for Seniors?
We use gentle movements
While the techniques we teach still promote strength, flexibility, and balance, they’re far gentler. We focus on deep breathing and slow deliberate movements in our seniors’ Pilates classes so we can teach older people how to exercise safely.
We supervise and teach you how to do each exercise using different equipment in the studio
We tailor our Pilates sessions for each person and class. We have standing Pilates techniques and exercises as well as sitting, so that seniors with all levels of mobility can enjoy the session.
Plenty of communication
We make sure we’re regularly checking in with our seniors to ensure they’re feeling comfortable. Our instructors consistently watch for body language between verbal check-ins that indicate someone might need to take a minute to rest.
We teach people how to listen to their bodies
Understanding and listening to your body is one of the most important things we teach in our seniors’ Pilates classes. We encourage people to take their time doing the exercises and sit and rest when they think they need to.
